Judge fines 'professional pick-pocket'

A woman was convicted of stealing a woman's brown leather wallet which contained €100 in cash at Kilkenny District Court this week.

Twenty-year-old Rezmias Rada, with an address at 14 Swiftbrook Close, Tallaght, Dublin 24 pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred at Pennefeather Lane, Kilkenny on November 22 last.

The court heard that a young woman bought a rose from the defendant, who was selling them on the night. After she put her wallet back into the bag she noticed the defendant rubbing off her bag. Upon discovering that her wallet was missing she followed and stopped the defendant and subsequently called the gardaí.

Judge William Harnett was also informed that there was a bench warrrant for her arrest arising out of her failure to attend in another district court in Dublin to face a similar charge.

“Having heard the facts it seems to me that this lady is a professional pick pocket,” added Judge Harnett.

The defendant's solicitor said that her client had never been to school and never worked, and her only excuse was that she was trying to make money selling roses. She is currently living with her brother and his family.

Judge William Harnett fined her €400 in respect of this offence and remanded her on continuing bail to appear in the Dublin court on November 25. He also ordered that her passport remain in the possession of the gardaí until the court case is finalised.
