A 24-year-old man was handed a two month suspended sentence for the possession of drugs at Kilkenny District Court this week.
Stephen Comerford, with an address at 44 Lower Newpark, Kilkenny city pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of cannabis at Ossory Bridge, Kilkenny on November 27, 2007.
Inspector Aidan Brennan told the court that the gardaí stopped the defendant at a checkpoint and found him in possession of a small piece of cannabis which he said was for his own use.
The defendant has two previous convictions for the unlawful possesion of drugs.
His solicitor, Michael Lanigan, said that his client had admitted he had a problem with cannabis. “He has been making an effort to get off it and is now off it.”
Judge William Harnett fined him €450 for the offence and imposed a two month prison sentence to be suspended provided he enter a probation bond for one year.
