Community spirit needed for sponsored walk

Kilkenny woman Cathy Buckley will take to the roads to raise money for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association on March 3.

The walk will begin at the rugby club, Waterford Road, Kilkenny, at 10am and people are asked to meet at 9.30am. The route will be 8k in length.

This sponsored walk will be in memory of Kathy’s brother, Paddy, who passed away last summer from the illness.

“Paddy, like many others before him, has been taken from his family and friends very cruelly and far too soon by MND,” Cathy Buckley said. “By organising this charity walk we hope to help those who are now living and suffering with MND. We hope to raise both awareness and much needed and valuable funds for IMNDA, to help ease the pain of those living with MND and that of their families.”

March 3 would have been Paddy’s 44th birthday. Motor neurone disease is an incurable neurological condition leaving people unable to do the everyday things the rest of us take for granted, like walking, talking, and swallowing, which may become virtually impossible. One person dies every five days from MND.

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA ) is dedicated to providing care for people with motor neurone disease, their carers, and families, as well as supporting research into the causes and treatments of MND.

The IMNDA is a small organisation that relies heavily on fundraising in order to continue providing vital services to the MND community; such as assistance towards home help, provision of specialised equipment on loan, and home visiting by an MND nurse specialist.

People of all ages are welcome to participate and sponsorship cards are available from www.mycharity.ie or contact Cathy at cathybuckley0@gmail.com.
