Defending Leinster and All-Ireland champions St Kieran’s College have been drawn against second favourites Dublin North in the Leinster Colleges senior hurling A championship quarter-finals.
The Kilkenny school recently won the Leinster league, but it was generally accepted that the Dublin Colleges were not up to full strength during the campaign due to Dublin’s involvement in the All-Ireland minor hurling and football finals. The threat to the defending champions is very real on this occasion, as this North Dublin squad have had the better of Kieran’s at juvenile level in the past.
Castlecomer Community School is also pitted against Dublin opposition Coláiste Eoin. The South Dublin school has Ballyboden St Enda’s as its chief feeder club, and Coláiste Eoin generally backbones the South Dublin Colleges. They will be strong opposition for the North Kilkenny school.
Kilkenny CBS will play Good Counsel and the St James’ Street school will have a right scrap with the New Ross college; two very even teams who have a sprinkling of youth and experience in their ranks.
St Brendan’s Birr should have enough strength and depth to defeat St Peter’s of Wexford.
The three Kilkenny colleges have home advantage and that may prove vital in these quarter-finals.
