Steady trade at Kilkenny Mart

Even though many of the meat factories have decided to drop their prices over the past couple of weeks, there was still a good solid trade for all types of cattle at Kilkenny Mart last Thursday.

In all there were over 900 animals on offer which was quite a respectable number, but some of the cattle were showing effects of the recent poor weather. For the first time in a while, cow prices were down by between €20 and €30 a head on the previous week, but this was mainly due to poorer quality. The heifers also sold very well.

Bullocks

The Bullocks weighing over 600kg made between €270 and €580 over their weight. Four Charolais weighing 650kg were sold for €1,050 each, while five blacks weighing 600kg fetched €880 each.

The bullocks weighing over 500kg were priced between €240 and €520 also over their weight. A single continental weighing 580kg made €1,005, while three Charolais weighing 595kg were sold for €1,030 each.

The bullocks weighing between 400kg and 500kg were priced between €180 and €425 over their weight. Seven Limousins weighing 495kg. made €810 each, while four Freisians weighing 410kg fetched €590 each.

The bullocks weighing under 400kg had a range of prices between €160 and €350 also over their weight. Three Belgian Blues weighing 390kg were sold for €720 each, while a pair of continentals weighing 320kg left the ring selling at €645 each.

Heifers

The beef heifers made between €300 and €550 over their weight. Five Simmentals weighing 540kg made €840 each, while two continentals weighing 575kg were sold for €840 each.

The butcher heifers were priced between €230 and €320 also over their weight. Eight Limousins weighing 440kg were sold for €660 each, while five Charolais weighing 490kg were priced at €790 each.

The store heifers sold at prices ranging between €145 and €320 over their weight. Three Simmentals weighing 395 kg. fetched €645 each, while another pair of Simmentals weighing 425kg made €740 each.
