Ice-skaters’ hopes for Kilkenny rink dashed

Plans for an ice-rink for Kilkenny this Christmas have once again been scuppered leaving Kilkenny people with no option but to travel to Carlow or Waterford for the festive sport again this year.

An application for planning permission for the facility had been submitted to Kilkenny Borough Council by a company called RSVP Event Management Ltd, however, they were unsuccessful in their bid to bring an ice-rink to the Castle Park in the city.

It’s understood that the application was incomplete and there was not enough time to proceed with the application.

Chairman of Kilkenny Tourism John Cleere said that they were very disappointed about the turn of events, however, he believed that it was not possible to proceed this year.

“Everyone bent over backwards in a bid to get an ice-rink for Kilkenny this year. But the provider didn’t have his ducks in a row. We lost out last year and it would have been great this year to have an ice-rink and a new bowling alley for the city. It would have been a big draw during the festive season. The timescale was too short for this Christmas - but we have high hopes for next year,” he added.

The location of the castle was also considered ideal for the ice-rink.
