Kilkenny gardaí help to raise cash with fresh donuts

Kilkenny gardai are bracing the elements today, Friday, when they take to the streets with their traditional donut shop in a bid to raise money for charity.

Cops on a Donut Shop has been a very worthwhile event hosted by the Garda in recent years that raises funds for Kilkenny and Ireland’s Special Olympians.

Last year Kilkenny gardai raised €6,700 for the charity which offers athletes free tracksuits, transport, and maintenance when they travel from home for team events.

This year the ‘cops’ will be at the Town Hall with a new donut shop and Sergeant Gary Gordon of Kilkenny Community Police says that the public can expect a surprise element to this year’s event, but he was tight-lipped about the secret feature.

“I can just say that there will be a new addition to the team this year but I’m not at liberty to say who or what that is at the moment. The public will have to come down to the Town Hall to see for themselves and while they are there, they might buy a few donuts,” he laughed.

The donuts are being made freshly in the early hours of the morning of the event by Oldtown Hill Bakehouse in Tullaroan. Dolly’s Donuts are filled with jam and are delicious as a morning treat or an afternoon snack.

They will be for sale at €2 for a pack of two or €5 for a pack of six.

The ‘cops’ will be at the shop all day Friday from 9am - 6pm and they are expecting some well known sports personalities to visit to show their support throughout the day.

“The Liam McCarthy Cup is due down and so is Mick Galwey and maybe some of our hurlers too,” said Sergeant Gordon.

“There will also be free entry into a draw for a signed Kilkenny jersey to anyone who buys donuts on the day.”

The local gardai are hopeful that the event will also raise awareness about people with intellectual disabilities and their sporting abilities.
