Hundreds attend Rev Elaine’s last service

A congregation of nearly 300 people filled St Canice’s Cathedral last Sunday, to wish Reverend Elaine Murray the best as she gave her last service in Kilkenny before leaving for her new parish in Carrigaline.

The popular minister was one half of Ireland’s only all-female Dean-Vicar pairing, having taken up residence in the cathedral’s vicarage over six years ago. Throughout her ministry in Kilkenny, she was well liked by parishioners for her hard work, affable nature, thought-provoking sermons and imaginative use of liturgy.

Among other things, she was an integral part in the setting up and running of the Theological Book Circle, the Lectio Divina, Young at Heart, the KIT Club and the Holiday Club.

After the service, there was a presentation to Rev Elaine and her family, followed by an informal lunch in the church.

Speaking at the end of the service, Dean of the cathedral Katharine Poulton wished her colleague well as she prepared to move on.

“[Elaine] is a caring and diligent priest and pastor, whether at a hospital bedside, or in the home of a housebound person, or over a cup of coffee with someone who needs a chat,” she said.

“So many things commend Elaine to her new parish, so many things we will all miss here.”

The search will now begin for a new vicar for the parish.
