A large group of KATS members, old and new, assembled in the Ormonde Hotel at the end of last month for a method-acting workshop run by All-Ireland Drama-winning director Paul Walsh.
Method acting is thought to be one of the most difficult techniques to learn. There are no technical forms or lessons that can be practiced to learn it. There are numerous versions of the Method, taught by different teachers.
Most of the techniques are based on the sense or emotional memory process. The actors have to fully immerse themselves in the character in order to sense all of the experiences the character would.x
How to interpret a script and how to create characters was the subject. Mr Walsh brought with him a selection of plays by well known playwrights such as Conor McPherson, Marie Jones, Martin McDonagh and Marina Carr.
The group worked on excerpts from By the Bog of Cats by Marina Carr and In Bruges by Martin McDonagh, and the workshop concluded on the stage of the Watergate Theatre.
The intensive workshop was a great success – and thanks go to the Ormonde Hotel and the Watergate Theatre.
KATS are currently deciding on the next series of plays, and new members are very welcome to join the drama group that has been entertaining the Kilkenny public for over 25 years now.
