Balloon release highlights domestic violence

A women’s group from the Newpark Close Family Resource Centre held a balloon release last Friday morning, as part of the ‘16 days of Action against domestic violence’ campaign.

The women each released five balloons – four black and one white – to visually represent the one in five women that experience domestic violence in Ireland. The event took place in the Memorial Garden, to join with other communities throughout the country to highlight the ongoing issue of domestic violence. The balloon release was followed by the reading of a poem and a minute’s silence.

Ber Brophy, outreach development worker with Newpark Close Family Resource Centre, organised the event with the women’s group.

Ms Brophy said that it was an important issue to highlight, and encouraged all women living with domestic violence to seek help and support from Women’s Aid, who can be contacted on their freephone helpline 1800 341 900 or email: info@womensaid.ie.
