Award-winning bus driver dies tragically at the workplace

A man who was fatally injured in an accident at work this week has been named.

He was father of two Martin Guilfoyle (49 ) from Urlingford in Co Kilkenny.

Mr Guilfoyle died on Tuesday afternoon last, while at work at Bernard Kavanagh’s Coach Hire in Urlingford. It is believed that the accident occurred at a repairs workshop on the premises.

Mr Guilfoyle won the tourism sector's premier award for the nation's best 'Cead Mile Failte'. US travel agent Mary Ann Coot nominated Mr Guilfoyle, for his special welcome, which has resulted in numerous return trips to Ireland by many in her groups. Mr Guilfoyle was also presented with the Transport and Tours Category Award.

The community of Urlingford is shocked at Mr Guilfoyle’s untimely death, and management and staff at the company where he worked are all united in grief.

The Health and Safety Authority was called to the scene of the incident and an investigation into the tragic death of Mr Guilfoyle will now be carried out.

Gardai and the emergency services were also present quickly after the incident occurred and a separate investigation will also take place.

A statement from Bernard Kavanagh and Sons Coach Hire, said, “management and staff at Bernard Kavanagh and Sons Ltd Kilkenny are extremely shocked by yesterday’s events which resulted in the death of our colleague Martin Guilfoyle.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time. We are working with the relevant authorities on their investigation in every way possible. Our primary concern is for his family at this time and we are doing everything in our power to help them cope with this tragedy.

“Martin Guilfoyle was a valued member of our team for over 27 years and we considered him to a part of our family.”
