A reconstruction of last month’s post office raid in Castlecomer has taken place and will be aired on RTE’s Crimecall programme next week.
The Crimecall team along with a fleet of actors and a host of reconstruction materials were in the town early this week where the dramatic scene was reconstructed.
Castlecomer gardai dealt with traffic in the area while the scene was being replayed by a professional film crew and actors.
The Crimecall programme will be aired on RTE 1 on Tuesday night and producers and the Garda Síochána are hopeful that setting the scene will generate new information about the incident.
“We have set the scene as realistically as possible from start to finish and we have spoken to a lot of locals from the area in an attempt to piece together the story as accurately as possible,” said an RTE Crimecall spokesperson.
“We have also got the details of other similar raids in the country and some that occurred on the same night, and we will be trying to figure out if these raids were linked to the incident in Castlecomer,” she added.
Castlecomer Post Office was raided in the early hours of Wednesday October 5, when the culprits drove a Hyundai 360 degree excavator in through the wall of the post office building, creating a massive hole and taking out two windows.
They removed what they believed was the post office safe, but it was since revealed that this was an older safe and held no cash. A second safe in the building was undisturbed.
The incident occurred between 5am and 5.30am and gardaí were only alerted when the conspicuous digger was spotted by a local on his way to work.
A similar digger could be seen on the Square in Castlecomer this week during the reconstruction of the attempted robbery.
Members of the public are asked to watch the programme on Tuesday night next at 10.15pm and if anyone has any information following the screening, to contact the numbers provided on the night.
