As Remembrance Day approaches, St Canice’s Cathedral in Kilkenny is seeking help in tracing the stories of some of Ireland’s fallen soldiers.
One of the cathedral’s beautiful stained glass windows is dedicated to the memory of four brave soldiers who died in the First World War, 1914-1918.
They were all grandsons of the late Peter Connellan of Coolmore Park, Kilkenny, circa 1900. The names of the soldiers are Peter Connellan, Henry Desmond O’ Hara, Roger Cecil Slack and Percy Francis Gethin.
The administrator of the cathedral is interested to receive contact from relatives or anyone who may have information on the soldiers as mentioned. To get in touch with the cathedral office, telephone 056-7764971 or email info@stcanicescathedral.com.
St Canice’s Cathedral also houses Ireland’s Memorial Records, which list the names of Irishmen who fell in the Great War. The seven volumes were compiled by the committee of the Irish National War Memorial, with eight variants of decorative border by Harry Clarke.
The tome was privately printed for the committee of the Irish National War Memorial by Maunsel and Roberts Limited, Dublin in 1923.
Remembrance Day, which falls on November 11, commemorates those soldiers who lost their lives during and since the First World War. Nearly 50,000 Irishmen were killed in action during the conflict.
