KCLR were the local heroes at a glittering radio awards ceremony held in the Lyrath Estate Hotel on Friday last as the station walked away with gold, silver, and bronze awards in the PPI Radio Awards, the prestigious radio industry awards that are coveted by national, regional, and local radio stations from north and south of the border on the island of Ireland.
KCLR Arts Show presenter Ashling Moore beat off stiff competition from RTE, BBC, and all other comers to come out tops with a Gold Award in the Music Programme Specialist category for the second year in a row.
Ashling, who also produces the popular Sue Nunn Show on the station, also received a bronze award in the Specialist Music Broadcaster of the year.
Meanwhile a KCLR radio drama entitled Hooked, written by Gillian Grattan, was awarded a Silver PPI Award, narrowly losing out to RTE in the radio drama section.
Another KCLR radio drama, A Time for Hope and Desperation, which was written by Rebecca Moran, was shortlisted in the drama category.
KCLR chief executive John Purcell said that it was a fantastic performance for the station and that everyone was very proud of all the shortlisted entries. He said that everyone was particularly pleased for Ashling Moore.
"Ashling's achievement in winning the same category two years in a row is absolutely fantastic and puts her in an elite group in Irish radio. Her award is thoroughly deserved and we are all very proud of her."
