Devious returns with a Bash

Devious Theatre is making a return visit to Cleeres Theatre for its fourth production of this year, Bash: latter day plays by Neil LaBute.

One of the most controversial American pieces of theatre of the past decade, Bash is a trio of dark one act plays that portray the evils that exist in everyday life.

The three horror stories at the centre of Bash are based on Greek myth but transposed to the present day.

They are made up of Iphigenia in Orem which is performed by John Morton and directed by Ken McGuire. In this piece a Utah businessman confides in a stranger in a hotel room with chilling results.

A Gaggle of Saints is about a young couple who separately recount the violent events of a romantic weekend away in New York City. It is performed by Amy Dunne and Ken McGuire, and directed by Annette O’Shea.

The final piece is Medea Redux, performed by Annette O’Shea and directed by John Morton. In this, a young woman tells of her complex and ultimately tragic relationship with her junior high school teacher when she was a teenager.

One of the most popular and prolific modern American playwrights, Neil LaBute’s work is known for its shocking and confessional style and his plays have been acclaimed for their caustic dramatic satire.

This marks the first time that his work has been performed in Kilkenny and it is only the second performance of Bash in Ireland. This is certainly a play to be avoided if you are of a sensitive or easily offended disposition.

It marks Devious Theatre’s first production since their hugely successful In The Future When All’s Well residency in Kilkenny Arts Office which saw them perform the three sell out shows Scratcher, Shifting, and Smitten over a six month period.

Bash: latterday plays runs from October 17 – 22 at 8pm nightly. Tickets are limited. Bookings can be made on 056 – 7762573 and tickets can be bought online at tickets.devioustheatre.com and in Cleeres. Tickets are €12. More information is available on www.devioustheatre.com
