The radio play, ‘A Time for Hope and Desperation’, written and directed by Rebecca Moran, has been shortlisted for a PPI Radio Award in the Radio Drama category.
‘A Time for Hope and Desperation’ was the culmination of an arts and health collaboration in 2010 between the playwright and director Rebecca Moran and the Callan-based chronic illness self-managementprogramme Ceart Patientwise. Presented as a series of monologues artistically woven together, ‘A Time for Hope and Desperation’ is a distinctive fictional exploration of the reality of living with a chronic illness - balancing love, humour, intimacy, and friendship.
Funded by the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme as managed by CREATE, the national development agency for collaborative arts, in conjunction with the primary sponsor, radio station KCLR96FM, this inspiring play first aired on December 29, 2010. The project, which involved over 60 participants from across the southeast region was also supported by individuals and organisations such as the Irish Wheelchair Association, the Citizen’s Information Board, the Centre for Independent Living, the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, Chuffey Media, and Mundipharma Pharmaceuticals.
It will be a busy week for the collaborators of a ‘A Time for Hope and Desperation’, as the project is also being highlighted as a case study on the new Arts and Health website being launched by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan,TD in Dublin on Wednesday October 5. Artsandhealth.ie is a new and independent internet arts and health resource developed by CREATE and the Waterford Healing Arts Trust, with the support of the Arts Council.
Meanwhile, the cast of Rebecca Moran’s most recent project will be busy in KCLR96FM’s studios this week recording the 5 episode radio drama series ‘Behind Closed Doors’, which was funded through the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision II Scheme. From the legacy of emigration to a culture of silence, the 5-part drama series lifts the veil on hard times in modern rural Ireland. All five episodes of ‘Behind Closed Doors’ will be premiering later this month on KCLR96FM.
The winners of the national 2010 PPI Radio Awards will be announced during an awards ceremony at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny on Friday, October 7.
