A council meeting that was set to have been a vital convention regarding the presidential nominations, was cancelled at the eleventh hour late on Tuesday night by Kilkenny County Council.
The members of the local authority were expected to meet on Wednesday at half past eight — the morning of the deadline for presidential nominations.
On Tuesday afternoon it was looking like the Kilkenny members would be deciding on whether or not David Norris would get a nomination but late on Tuesday evening Dublin City Council endorsed Senator Norris, deeming the Kilkenny meeting unnecessary.
Cllr Malcolm Noonan was set to propose Senator Norris, while chairman of the council, Fine Gael Councillor Paul Cuddihy had indicated that he would not obstruct Senator Norris’s nomination and would second Cllr Noonan’s proposal if it were required.
However, the meeting was cancelled when Senator Norris received the backing of the fourth council in Dublin on Tuesday evening, giving the councillors of Kilkenny a morning in bed rather than a dawn start.
