Betty Walsh is 2011 Kilkenny Grandparent of the Year

The Kilkenny winner of the 2011 Grandparents of the Year competition was announced this week and Betty Walsh from Kilkenny was crowned the Kilkenny winner.

She was nominated by her one-year-old grandchild Aaron Walsh, whose entry stated, “My name is Aaron and I think my nanny Betty should win grandparent of the year because she is the best nanny is the whole wide world.

“My mammy had me over a year ago and she hadn’t got my daddy because they had broken up but my nanny helped my mammy so much — she helped her get everything prepared for my arrival, and when mammy went into labour nanny, who has arthritis in her back, went to the hospital with mammy and comforted her and told her it would all be OK and she stood by for hours until I arrived safe and sound.

“My nanny is always there for me and my mammy and her other nine grandchildren. Granny often leaves herself short so she can get nice things for all of us and she hasn’t had a break away in a very long time so she really deserves one. She looks after everyone and never thinks of herself, she is so kind, loving, caring, very funny, and the best person in the world as well as best nanny, mammy and best friend. We all love her so much and would like everyone else to know just how great she is. Aaron x x x.”

National Grandparents Day, held on the last Sunday of September each year, encourages all grandchildren across Ireland to visit their grandparents and say thank you for all the love and support they have given over the years.

As well the an overall winner Cadbury and Friends of the Elderly will award the county winners, including Betty Walsh from Kilkenny, with a delicious Cadbury Roses Hamper and a €200 voucher courtesy of the Irish Professional Photographers Association.
