Evergreen in seventh heaven as weather causes major disruption

Soccer round-up

A skeleton fixture programme took place over the weekend as 15 of the scheduled 21 fixtures fell by the wayside due to the horrendous weather.

Seven of the Sunday matches had already being postponed from Saturday, but a further eight matches were cancelled on Sunday due to the unplayable surfaces inspected by the respective referees.

Evergreen were the major winners over the weekend as they thumped Thomastown United 7-1 in United Park, Thomastown.

The Andrew brothers were on fire scoring five goals between them as Neil bagged a hat-trick while brothers Mark powered his way to bagging a brace.

Jamie Owens and Chris Whearty were also on target as Evergreen climbed as the league champions climbed to pole position at the top of the table.

A hat-trick from Liam Forristal helped Fort Rangers to only their second league victory of the season as they defeated bitter neighbourly rivals East End United 4-2 in Bennettsbridge.

Kenny Morris was also on target.

The other two league fixtures fell foul of the weather as Deen Celtic v Newpark and Southend v Stoneyford were cancelled.

Freebooters continued defence of the Leinster Junior cup will have to wait as their tie with Castleknock was postponed.

St Pat’s Boys trounced Bridge United 4-1 in the Pat Maher Shield, while only two games in the remaining divisions went ahead

Evergreen B and table toppers AC Kilkenny finished 1-1 in the Electro City division one as John McCormack scored for AC Kilkenny.

All Eamonn Maher Coach Hire division two matches fell foul of the weather, while only the clash of Clifden United and Evergreen was the only fixture to survive the inclement weather in the Duikse Glass Division three.

Despite enjoying the lions share of possession the Clara men couldn’t take full advantage and had to be content with a share of the spoils against Evergreen’s third team who are table toppers.

Scoring ace Kevin Shortall and an early equaliser from James Brennan found the target for Clifden who are settling nicely under the management duo of John Shortall and his assistant Niall Kavanagh.

Kilkenny Youths managed to get their inter-league campaign off to a winning start as they defeated Kildare 3-2 despite the underfoot Derdimus surface making playing conditions difficult to adapt.

A Ronan Houlihan goal from a Paul Guinan opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Anthony Ryan replied for the Lilywhites within 60 seconds.

However, a Paul Guinan goal in the 54th minute restored Kilkenny’s lead before John Browne levelled matters in the 63rd minute taking advantage of slack Kilkenny defending.

Kilkenny produced a magical moment that conjured the winning goal.

A terrific run down the left-wing by substitute CJ Browne saw his perfect cross meet Ben Ryan, and the 16-year-old scoring Booters sensation smashed his shot for a cracking goal as Kilkenny secured three priceless points.

The ladies fixtures programme fell by the wayside which included newcomers Portlaoise town’s away trip to Evergreen.

The ladies league comprises of 10 teams and a full schedule of programmes is fixed for next Sunday.

That includes the re-fixture of Portlaoise v Evergreen but now played at the Laois venue due to the postponement at the Evergreen grounds
