Halves gig expands as Cushions come on board

Music fans planning to catch indie-electronica favourites Halves in Kilkenny this weekend will be glad to found out they now have the chance to revel in the sensational sounds of a quartet of promising acts.

The Dublin quartet with a penchant for bears will now combine their gig with the Problems At The Pancake House promoted House of Cosy Cushions gig after a slight shuffle in the schedule at Cleere’s Theatre.

Waterford native Katie Kim and local band Beef Supreme will join Halves and House of Cosy Cushions on the night for what promises to an enthralling evening of post-rock pleasure.

In a relatively short time, Halves have managed to make a telling contribution to Ireland’s growing post-rock/electronica scene with their atmospheric and emotive combinations.

Halves are Brian Cash, Elis Czerniak, Tim Czerniak and Dave Scanlon, who play a combination of instruments from electric guitars, bass, drums and piano to electric violin, accordian, synth, vocoder, samplers and, of course, glockenspiel. When it is all put together the group’s sound has been described as ‘epically downbeat’.

The band released a debut EP in May 2007 with ‘Take Exact Revenge’ as the lead single alongside ‘Burial On A Windfarm’ and the instrumental ‘Tony Hart’s Revenge Theme’.

It wasn’t long before their innovative sound caught the attention of listening ears and the band hit the festival circuit, appearing at the Hard Working Class Heroes and Electric Picnic festivals in 2007 and the same two festivals in 2008 as well as Oxegen.

Somewhere in between they found time to visit Kilkenny as part of the new ‘Wired’ strand of the Kilkenny Arts Festival with a host of other up and coming bands in the post-rock genre, including House of Cosy Cushions, Dae Kim and A Safe Dry Place.

Along the way they have managed to share the billing with bands like Sigur Ros, Rage Against The Machine, My Bloody Valentine and Bjork and were one of only four Irish bands invited to partake in the prestigious Eurosonic 08, where they played to a packed house.

And out of the last year and a half the band have managed to write and record a new, seven song EP, ‘Haunt Me When I’M Drowsy’, which was released at the end of October.

The EP portrays a growing diversity of sound, from crunching distortion to ambient and epic orchestral compositions and received a European release as well as being available in all major Irish record stores and on iTunes.

Psychedelic dream rockers House of Cosy Cushions will be familiar to Kilkenny audiences having previously performed on Problems At The Pancake House bills and at the ‘Wired at Cleere’s’ strand of the Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Their new album, ‘Animal Dream’, is available now.

Also on the bill will be former Dae Kim member, Waterford’s Katie Kim, who has kicked off a solo career with her new debut album ‘Twelve’. The album features material Kim has been writing and working on for the past 10 years and showcases a diverse array of music. The final act on the bill for the night will be Beef Supreme. KilkennyMusic.com and Problems At The Pancake House promotions present Halves, House of Cosy Cushions, Katie Kim and Beef Supreme at Cleere’s on November 15. Admission €10.
