At the end of the day it is probably all about supply and demand and with only 800 cattle on offer at Kilkenny Mart last Thursday it was to be expected that there would be an increase in the prices obtained during the previous week.
Practically all the bullocks enjoyed increases of between €10 and €15 a head with a significant rise in the price of lighter store bullocks. Heifers also sold very well with prices quite similar to the previous week.
Bullocks
The bullocks weighing over 600kg were sold at prices between €345 and €600 over their weight. Nine Charolais weighing 690kg made €1,130 each, while three Limousins weighing 635kg made €1,080 each.
The bullocks weighing over 500kg were priced between €350 and €465 also over their weight. Five Herefords weighing 540kg fetched €900 each, while three Charolais weighing 525kg. were sold for €890 each.
The bullocks weighing between 400kg and 500kg sold between €200 and €470 over their weight. Ten Limousins weighing 450kg were priced at €860 each, while four Charolais weighing 445kg made €780 each.
The bullocks weighing under 400kg were priced between €150 and €380 over their weight. Eight Freisians weighing 345kg made €500 each, while nine Aberdeen Angus weighing 385kg were sold for €700 each.
Heifers
The beef heifers sold between €320 and €420 over their weight. A pair of continentals weighing 525kg were sold for €885 each, while two Limousins weighing 600kg fetched €990 each.
The butcher heifers were priced between €230 and €350 also over their weight. Three Herefords weighing 430kg made €660 each, while another three Limousins weighing 470kg were sold for €800 each.
The store heifers also sold very well making between €150 and €305 over their weight. Four Aberdeen Angus weighing 395kg made €630 each, while a pair of Limousins weighing 385kg were sold for €640 each.
With less farmer buyers in attendance there was a quieter trade for the weanlings. The plainer types were a little more difficult to sell. Overall it was another successful day trading at Kilkenny Mart.
