Farmers in the region who have an interest in winter feeding should make it their business to travel to Kildalton Agricultural College today.
Because concentrate prices have risen by almost €100 a ton over the past twelve months Teagasc is holding a fodder and feed event which no doubt will prove to be both interesting and enlightening.
A conference this morning will be followed this afternoon by a series of feed advice demonstrations on the Kildalton College farm, where farmers can meet and discuss various aspects of winter feeding with Teagasc advisors, teachers and research staff.
David Hickey from R&H Hall will outline the challenges facing the animal feed sector over the coming years, while Des Cronin from Inform Nutrition will deal with the role of minerals in feeding systems.
Teagasc researchers will cover the cost and relative value of forages and concentrates as well as optimising fertiliser use for both grass and silage.
The event in Piltown will also provide an ideal opportunity for both dairy and livestock farmers to discuss developments in animal nutrition, while assessing options for future feeding strategies.
