Almost without exception we have all said at some time or other we would like to get down to writing up our own family history while the old folk are still with us. There is an old saying, “when an old man dies a library burns”.
The spur you may need to get your family story down on paper now is presented by the staging of the annual and very popular family history course by the adult education section of the Kilkenny Vocational Education Committee.
The course, delivered by well know genealogist, Kilkenny man Pat Nolan is designed to equip those taking part with the information and skill necessary to undertake the task and enjoy the journey. It discusses the first steps — what is involved in interviewing relatives, how best to use civil birth, death, and marriage records, the factors ensuring you are getting the most from church and land documents and many other sources.
Above all it helps you acquire the mind set of a ‘time-detective’ so valuable to the researcher of family facts.
The nine week course begins on Tuesday September 27 in Ormonde College, on Ormonde Road, at 7.30pm and incorporates an all day visit to Dublin to bring familiarity with records and locations in our capital city.
Registration will be on a first come basis in Saint Kieran’s College (entrance off New Street ) on Monday September 19, from 7.30pm onwards. Further details are available on web site www.irishorigins.ie or phone 056 772 1483.
