Gardai are investigating the cause of a horrific car accident in Kilkenny on Wednesday evening, which left two people dead and three others in hospital with serious injuries.
The head-on, two vehicle collision happened at Troyswood, just outside Kilkenny city on the Freshford Road, at 6.45pm on Wednesday.
The two people who died in the crash have been named as Tommy and Angela Kenneally, a married couple, both in their sixties, from North Tipperary. Mr Kenneally, a farmer, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 61-year-old wife was brought to St Luke's General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The couple’s daughter, who was driving the vehicle, was also brought to St Luke’s Hospital, along with the two occupants of the second car, where they were treated following the accident. The occupants of the other vehicle are understood to be brother and sister.
The passengers had to be cut from the wrecked vehicles by emergency services, who were quickly on the scene, close to the water treatment facility on the Freshford Road.
Yesterday (Thursday ), the drivers of the two vehicles, both of whom have sustained serious injuries, were transferred to Waterford hospital. The second vehicle’s passenger remains in St Luke’s where he is being treated for minor injuries.
While a number of witnesses to the incident have already come forward, Gardai have renewed their appeal for witnesses.
Garda crash scene investigators immediately closed the stretch of road, and diversions were put in place. The road has since been re-opened, following a forensic examination of the scene.
Family members and next of kin have been informed.
