Barnstorm Theatre Company has two youth theatre groups and both have places for new members. Youth theatre groups concentrate on drama and theatre skills and are children and young people centred.
The youth theatre provides its members with a vast array of workshops mainly focused on acting skills, but can also delve into directing, writing, lighting, and more. Each group runs weekly and produces at least one performance a year. The workshops are facilitated by outreach officer Anna Galligan. Anna, who was a member of a youth theatre, has trained and worked as a professional actor and created Ireland’s only full time accredited drama facilitation course, ArtsTrain.
“Having been a member of a youth theatre and also having worked with youth theatres nationally for over 10 years, I know and can see the amazing time that young people have when they join,” she said. “You don’t have to want to become a professional actor.”
If you are between 10 and 18 years of age, have an interest in drama, are enthusiastic and can commit some free time to youth theatre, then call Barnstorm to apply to join its youth theatre.
The junior youth theatre runs weekly on Mondays from 4.30pm to 6pm and caters for 10 to 13 years. Its starts back up on September 12. Membership is filled on a first come first served basis.
The senior youth theatre runs weekly on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and caters for those in secondary school, 14-plus. The senior youth theatre will hold an open workshop on September 6. For planning purposes booking is essential.
There is an annual membership fee for youth theatre members of €75 and a charge of €5 per weekly workshop (a limited number of scholarships are available ). All money taken in goes back into the youth theatre.
