Rice a doubt for Carrickshock

Michael Rice is a real doubt for Carrickshock as they take on James Stephens in round five of the St Canice's Credit Union Senior Hurling League this weekend.

The hard-working midfielder went into the All-Ireland semi-final clash with Waterford after recovering from a shoulder injury, and was replaced in the closing minutes of the match. He has been receiving daily treatment since last Sunday's clash, and two games within seven days may be too much for the dedicated Carrickshock man.

Fennelly set to return

Brendan Fennelly, who steered Carrickshock to the county final last year, could yet return to the backroom team.

Fennelly took over as Laois manager after last year's county final, and the club was always hopeful that he would be available to them for the closing stages of this year's championship.

Carrickshock appeared to be an improved squad in the early rounds of the league, but the loss of players to injury and summer work in foreign lands has weakened them in recent rounds. However, with the return of missing players and the likely return from injury of David Franks, and hopefully John Tennyson as well as the popular Fennelly likely to be added to the back room, the 'Shocks could be in a position to mount a big championship challenge.

Richie Reid between the posts

The Kilkenny minor hurling forward is set to assume the position of goalkeeper for his club Ballyhale Shamrocks.

The regular goalkeeper James Connolly has emigrated, so the talented 18-year-old Reid is set to be his replacement, now that he is free from Kilkenny minor team duties.

Shamrocks are gathering in strength, with the return from injury in round four of their powerful centre, half back Eamonn Walsh – a further boost to their formidable squad. Shamrocks are assured of a quarter-final place in the championship, and they are the team to beat in this year's competition.

The 'Boro in bother

Dicksboro have injury problems ahead of their crucial meeting with city rivals O' Loughlin Gaels this weekend.

Towering centre forward Martin Gaffney pulled a hamstring in training and has been ruled out, while teak-tough defender Danny Kenny hasn't trained for some time as he is nursing an injury. Add to that holiday absentees David Glynn and Shane Maher, and it leaves the 'Boro men short of four talented and physically powerful players.

Katie loses fitness battle

The talented Katie Power has lost her battle to be fit for Kilkenny's All-Ireland Senior Camogie semi-final clash with Galway on Saturday in Nowlan Park at 2pm.

The Piltown woman has worked tremendously hard to recover from a serious knee injury that has ruled her out of action for the past three months. Katie won an Ashbourne Cup medal with Waterford Institute of Technology in February, and she had been in top class form during the league until her injury.

A win for Kilkenny on Saturday would give her a chance to be fit for an All Ireland final on the second weekend in September.

Brigid as brilliant as ever

Brigid Mullally continues to shine on the camogie field.

The Glenmore woman continues to pull the strings for her club in the league and championship. Her ability to read the game and make the right decisions when in possession is a lesson for any player or student of the game.

Brigid, who starred for Kilkenny for more than a decade in the 1990s has lost none of her fitness and talent, as she continues to serve her club, Glenmore.
