The idea for the Cúltec Hurley came to entrepreneurs, John Grehan and Tom Wright, while playing golf in their local Birr Club.
They noted that golf, tennis, badminton and even fishing rods have all benefited from modern synthetic materials, such as graphite and alloy. Both men are long time GAA enthusiasts with years of experience in the game, having played and coached in the past.
After consultation with the GAA, the two men knew they were on the right track. There one concern as to make sure that a new hurley would not infringe on the integrity of the game.
They set out to replicate the best qualities of native Irish ash and eliminate its disadvantages. For those who think that this might be a mark against it, it’s worth noting that most of the ash used at present is imported.
John says they look forward to the hurley appearing in Croke Park at a Senior All-Ireland Final, having already seen it being used at Junior and Intermediate level hurling, and with the Offaly Girls for their Junior and Intermediate camogie All-Irelands.
Buying the Cúltec hurley online costs €35, which is a little dearer than the traditional hurley, but is much more competitive when its resilience is factored in.
It is fitted with two comfortable hand grips, a specially designed end cap, and requires no metal bands. It is splinter-proof and shatter-proof, and the edges are rounded for safety.
Further advantage is the performance characteristics of each unit are exactly the same, meaning the hurleys are inter changeable among a team and can produce consistent results.
The Cúltec hurley comes in a range of colours with the most popular being an ash-like imitation of the traditional hurley.
