Mary Coughlan to play Hole in the Wall gig

Mary Coughlan will play an intimate gig at the Hole In The Wall in Kilkenny city on Thursday, July 21.

The House of Ill Repute is Irish torch-blues legend Coughlan’s acclaimed new album. She is playing several Irish dates this year, when she will tell her unique story in her imitable style through the many songs she has recorded.

Also available now is ‘Bloody Mary’ – the singer’s funny, moving and outspoken memoir. Ireland’s best-loved jazz artist pulls no punches in describing her redemption from alcoholism and drug addiction and gets to the heart of what made her so contrary.

In 1985, Coughlan made an acclaimed appearance on the Late Late Show and recorded her seminal album Tired and Emotional, showcasing her powerful and bluesy jazz stylings. Her following albums further established her as an accomplished songwriter and commanding performer.

She also managed to put her stamp on the work of other artists, covering acts from The Rolling Stones to Billie Holiday, and recording material written for her by the likes of Elvis Costello and Kirsty McColl.

In the 1990s she signed a new recording contract with Big Cat Records. The label issued an excellent live set alongside her acclaimed US debut, ‘After The Fall’. Coughlan is playing a selection of dates offering the unique opportunity to see her performing songs from the new album as well as a selection of material spanning her whole career.

Tickets go on sale today, Friday July 1, from Rollercoaster Records, Kilkenny. Phone 056 7763669 for bookings.
