News from the Village GAA Club

Byrne Cup

The Village scored a comprehensive 4-18 to 1-16 win over St Lachtain’s (Freshford ) in the third round of the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Byrne Cup. The Village dominated this game from the off racing into a six point lead before Freshford registered their first score. The Village have a massive crunch fixture coming up on Friday July 8 when they will clash with neighbours, O’Loughlin Gaels, in the fourth round of the Kilkenny senior hurling league/championship.

Minor county

Congratulations to Village minors Diarmuid Cody, Luke Hickey and Jack McGrath who were part of the Kilkenny minor hurling panel that beat Wexford in the Leinster semi-final last Saturday in Wexford Park. Kilkenny will move on to play Dublin in the Leinster final on Sunday July 3 in Croke Park.

Junior B

The Village Junior B panel scored a last minute 1-9 to 1-8 victory over a strong St Patrick’s (Ballyragget ) in the quarter finals of the Junior B Hurling League. This was an ultra competitive fixture from the throw in with both sides trading scores. St Patrick’s broke through the Village rearguard to dispatch a goal which appeared to have been the single difference right throughout the game.

However after a titanic effort in the closing 10 minutes from the Villagemen, Shane Egan broke onto a ball and he duly fired the ball to the net which ensured qualification for the semi-finals of the league. This was a great display of heart and effort from each Village player. Team: Joe Murphy, David Hennessy, Damien Phelan, Paddy Noonan, Michael Neary, Keith Ryan, John Meehan, James Hennessy, Anthony Lawlor, Adrian Harkin, Shane Egan, Keith Mulch, Conor O’Grady, Gary Whelan, Peter McBride. Subs used: Robbie Corcoran, Harry Wallace, Ian Hayes.

Leinster final

Best wishes to Kilkenny manager Brian Cody and Village stars Eoin Larkin, Matthew Ruth and Jackie Tyrrell in the upcoming Leinster senior hurling final v Dublin on Sunday July 3. Throw in is at 4pm in Croke Park.
