Over 300 people participated in the Little South Run held in Kilmacow on Sunday, June 5. As always there was the serious element to the run when over 140 athletes from many parts of Ireland set off in the four mile road race.
The race was started by Ned Williams and commentary over the length of the course was provided by Fintan Walsh (Waterford AC ) and he was aided by camera-man James Aylward.
The winner in the men’s race was Andrew Ledwith (Meath ) and the women’s race was won by Linda Byrne (Dublin ). The first local person home was Enda Walsh (Dunkitt ) and the first local lady home was Siobhán Barron (Dangan ). The boy’s juvenile race was won by Jonathan Crowley (Mooncoin ) and the girl’s by Isabelle Morgan (Greenville ).
There were over 170 joggers and walkers. Among them were people from Kilmacow, the neighbouring parishes in South Kilkenny and people from Waterford and Tipperary.
Tea and refreshments were served in the Community Centre while the results were tabulated. The Barrow Room was packed for the presentation of prizes under the various categories.
Kilmacow Hospice Support Group made a special presentation to honour the contribution of the late Maura Quinlan to the cause of the hospice . The Maura Quinlan Award – The Spirit of the Hospice - was a tribute to her outstanding and selfless efforts on behalf of the Hospice Movement.
This award was presented by Maura’s daughter Cáit to Patsy and Aileen Kehoe (Glenmore ) in recognition of their participation every year in the Little South Run and also for their consistent support for local events including and especially for those associated with the hospice.
St Senan’s Athletics Club and Kilmacow Hospice Support Group acknowledged their appreciation of the efforts of all those involved in catering in the Community Centre and all who acted as stewards along the route.
Funds raised from the Little South Run will be donated to the hospice. All outstanding sponsorship cards should be returned in the next week to the St. Senan’s AC Committee or to the local hospice support group.
