The Mary Slattery Memorial Cycle took place this June Bank Holiday Weekend raising unprecedented funds for Chernobyl children in Kilkenny for the summer.
140 cyclists took to the roads in a bid to raise much needed funds for Chernobyl Children International. So far a total of €36,000 was raised by the cyclists and will go towards funding The Summer Rest and Recuperation Programme which currently is hosting the children from Belarus in Kilkenny.
The route began in Cork on Saturday Morning and the cyclists were given a great send off from KCLR’s Edwina Grace and Jon Slattery and Ciara Whelan from The Holiday Show. Jon and Ciara also took part in the cycle with Edwina broadcasting and supporting the cyclists on route.
This year’s cycle was particularly special as it was renamed after a much missed member of the Chernobyl Kilkenny Outreach Group Mary Slattery, who sadly passed away last July. Many of Mary’s family and friends took part in the cycle including her son Alan Slattery, and friends and neighbours from Alan’s home in Willow Close.
The cyclists regrouped at Cuffesgrange before making their victory lap of Kilkenny lead by Garda Peter O’Shea and the Kilkenny traffic unit before finally finishing at the Ormonde Hotel. The Chernobyl Kilkenny Outreach Group were overwhelmed by the success of the weekend, and thanked everyone that cycled, those who donated goods and equipment and all those who formed the Support Crew.
