Kilkenny chess club begin league competitions

Kilkenny chess players will compete in three Leinster chess leagues this year.

Kilkenny will be without their star player, international master Mark Heidnenfield. However, Kilkenny will still fight for top spot in the Leinster Amstrong chess league.

The third team is the youngest in Ireland at present. Most of the players are under 16 years of age. This is a truly amazing achievement for the Kilkenny chess club.

In their first match this year, the youngsters won all their games playing against senior players in Dublin.

The Halloween chess tournament was held in Kilkenny recently and the winner was Eoin Minnock from Cuffesgrange.

The All-Ireland junior chess championship will take place in Kilkenny in April 2009 and is tipped to be a major event.
