Athletes from local schools had considerable success at the Leinster Schools track and field finals in Santry last week.
Medals were won in all grades. The following were among the medal winners: Minor – Roisin Gogarty, Loreto, 3rd javelin; Junior – Charmaine O’Donoghue, Presentation, 1st high jump; Under 16 – Ailish Butler, Presentation, 1st long jump; Intermediate – Cliodhna Manning, 2nd 100m, 2nd 200m and Sinead McDonagh, 3rd high jump, both Loreto; Megan Morrissey, Presentation, 2nd 1,500m; James Maher, St Kieran’s, 2nd 1,500m; Sophie Parkinson, Kilkenny College, 1st shot put, 1st discus. Senior – Laura Langton, Presentation, 1st 100m hurdles, Louise Holmes, Kilkenny College, 1st 100m, 1st 200m; Emma Fenlon, Rosbercon, 1st shot put; Sonia Buggy, Castlecomer, 1st triple jump, 2nd long jump; Ian Boland, 3rd 400m and Michael O’Sullivan, 1st high jump, both CBS.
County Championships
Friday last marked the culmination of the Kilkenny County A Athletics Championships in Scanlon Park — once again Castlecomer was well represented.
Competing were Aoife O'Sullivan, Ella Nolan (U8 ); Katie Clarke, Brian Holland, David Allen, Ciaran Meagher Tommy Coogan, William Fox (U9 ); Molly Coogan, James Hogan, (U10 ); Ellen Buggy, Aoife Cahalan, Emer Stone, Shannon Feehan, Sarah Dwyer, Emma Dwyer, Nicky Connolly, Conor Clarke, Killian Hogan (U11 ): Roisin Allen, Liam Kenny, James Buggy, Liam Holland (U12 ); Ross Connolly, Sean Coogan (U13 ); Clare Appazato (U15 ); Orla Brennan, Eimear Rice (U16 ); Jack Brennan (Junior Men ).
William Fox was the youngest of the Castlecomer competitors to take a place on the podium when he received a silver medal for his second place finish over 300m at U9. Conor Clarke followed as gold medallist in the same event at U11. Next up was James Buggy to receive a bronze medal for his third place over 60m hurdles at U12 level — to this he added a very creditable fourth over 300m. Ross Connolly was fourth in two events at U13 — 300m and shot put. Castlecomer featured on the presentation podium again when Claire Appazato was the U15 100m hurdle bronze medallist. She was followed by Eimear Rice who won silver in the 100m hurdles. Jack Brennan was the Junior Men's 3,000m gold medallist.
