Kilkenny Fine Gael Councillor Pat O’ Neill has been elected to the Seanad.
The Bennettsbridge former county councillor was elected onto the agricultural panel late in the early hours of Thursday morning, filling the 11 seat panel.
Senator O’Neill who is a farmer by profession said that he was delighted when it was revealed at 2am on Thursday morning that he had been elected.
Fine Gael and Fianna Fail took four seats each with two going to Labour and Sinn Fein securing one seat.
Kilkenny Minister Phil Hogan had lobbyed hard for the Kilkenny Councillor and the hard work paid off.
Kilkenny’s previous senator John Paul Phelan was elected to the Dail this year leaving Kilkenny without Seanad representation.
Fine Gael’s David Fitzgerald and Pat Crotty also ran in the election for Kilkenny but were not elected at time of going to press.
