25 songs for 25th anniversary of Chernobyl

Declan O' Rourke and Eleaner Mc Evoy have confirmed that they are to join the already stellar line up of Paul Noonan (Bell X 1 ), Liam O’ Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers ), Jamie Lawson, Clive Barnes and Ian Doyle to remember the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

On the night, Martin Bridgeman of KCLR 96 FM will MC while the musicians will sing hits from 1986 which is the year that the Chernobyl disaster occurred.

The event is organised to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster and to raise awareness and funds for Adi Roche’s charity.

This is a particularly fitting time for this event in light of the Japanese Fukushima reactor disaster which continues to pump radioactive gases into the atmosphere following the recent earthquake on the Japanese coast over a month ago.

Speaking to the Kilkenny Advertiser, local musician Clive Barnes who is playing at the event said, “this is really relevant at the moment after everything that has happened in Japan in recent times. It has brought the events of Chernobyl back to everyone’s mind and it is a reminder of what can happen. I would urge people to come out on Monday and remember the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster and support this great cause.”

Barnes pointed out that punters are getting great value for money with their ticket on the night as the line up is indeed one that will tickle many fancies.

“There are some great people playing for this gig and I’m not surprised that it attracted the quality acts that it did. We as musicians are always asked to do charity gigs and although we do what we can we can’t do them all. This one is different though. We were each given a list of songs from the year 1986 when the disaster occurred and we can pick some we like and rearrange them to suit our own styles. This has been great fun! I personally took the ball and ran with it as they say. We can also mix some of our own songs in there too so it’s going to make for a very interesting night of music and entertainment.”

The event takes place at Set Theatre, Kilkenny on Easter Monday (April 25 ) in Kilkenny. Tickets are €25.
