An unmanned car travelled down a hill at speed and ploughed into three unsuspecting Kilkenny women, including an invalid mother, on Monday.
71-year-old Peggy Conran was flung from her wheelchair with the impact of the collision, while her daughters Anastasia Kavanagh and Kathleen Conran were also injured when the free-wheeling vehicle crashed into them as they left their car in a parking space on Cathedral Street in Enniscorthy.
The three were rushed to Wexford General Hospital where they were treated for their injuries which were not life threatening. The three women were treated for bruising, shock and other minor injuries. They were discharged from hospital on Monday evening.
It’s understood that the accident occurred when a woman left her car parked on a hill but forgot to put on the handbrake when she left the vehicle to pop into a shop.
When she returned she was unable to locate her car and on witnessing a scene nearby went to investigate the commotion.
She was told that a car had run into three women and it was only then that she realised that the vehicle was hers.
The three women had been on a day trip to Enniscorthy from Graiguenamanagh when the accident occurred.
Kathleen had been helping her mother into her wheelchair when they were both struck by a car that careered across the street.
Gardaí have said that they have not yet definitively established what caused the car to move and were continuing to interview witnesses.
Several witnesses attended the scene and the three women said that they were ever grateful to those who helped them prior to the arrival of three ambulances which took the three injured women to hospital.
The car was removed from the scene for technical examination.
