New design on membership card
As part of the Kilkenny Carnegie Library 100 celebrations last November, a “Design A Library Card” competition” took place for Primary Schools around the county.
The winners were: 1st Jo-Anna Galavan, 5th Class, The Rower N.S.
2nd Orla O’Donnell, 6th Class, Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál Graiguenamanagh 3rd Aoife Mulhall, 4th Class S, Leonard’s N.S. Dunnamaggin Co. Kilkenny.
Jo-Anna’s design features on new library membership cards. It shows a library tree covered in bookflowers. Some of these bookflowers are being carried away to readers by butterflies and bees. It is a very attractive and colourful design and shows the sturdy library tree at the centre of the scene.
Chess lessons in local libraries
Kilkenny Library Service has engaged the Kilkenny-based chess master and coach Darko Polimac to offer free chess lessons to adults and children in three libraries.

Daffodil Day Coffee Morning in City Library
The annual coffee morning will take place from 10am on Friday March 25.
Library staff invite you to join them for a cuppa in aid of this major charity. Daffodil Day merchandise will be on sale and there will also be a raffle. Donations of cakes will be very acceptable.
Ten Quick Reads titles just published
Bestselling authors James Patterson, Linwood Barclay, Sheila O'Flanagan, Terry Jones, and Mike Gayle alongside poet Benjamin Zephaniah and footballer Charlie Oatway are among the Quick Reads authors for 2011.
The great mix of titles and their accessible format make Quick Reads perfect for adults who are new to reading, find reading tough or simply want some short entertainment from great writers. Copies of these books are available in all libraries in Kilkenny.
READiscover your local library
Irish children’s author Benji Bennett met classes from Castlecomer Boys NS and Wandesford NS recently. This visit was one of 12 nationwide author visits sponsored by Bord Gais Energy who is the main sponsors of the READiscover campaign.
KCLR broadcast from the library and Sue Nunn interviewed library staff. She spoke to the author himself and how he became a writer in the sad family circumstances of losing his four- year-old son.
On World Book Day Kilkenny based author, Paula Leyden spoke to 5th classes from Presentation Primary School, St. John of God NS and the Gaelscoil.
Paula’s new book, The Butterfly Heart was launched on this day and is a selection of stories based in Africa. Paula also made an impromptu appearance at the Loughboy Bookclub which was holding it’s monthly meeting in the library on this day. Stories and Crafts for toddlers
Thursday morning in Loughboy Library is stories and crafts for toddlers time. Activities begin at 11.30am and all are welcome. Free knitting for adults in Castlecomer takes place on Thursdays at 10am. Informal setting and all are welcome.
Book club News
Castlecomer: The Afternoon Book Club will meet on March 30, at 2.30pm and will discuss The Girl in the Wicker Basket by Ann Kenny. New members are welcome.
Pageturners will meet on March 31, at 8pm and discuss You by Nuala Ni Chonchuir. Membership is full at the moment.
Loughboy: The book club will meet on April 7, at 11am and will discuss Mistaken by Neil Jordan and Christine Falls by Benjamin Black. New members are welcome.
