Kilkenny to host European kettlebell sports competition

This Saturday, March 26 Kilkenny City will host the EGSA European Kettlebell Sports Competition. 70 competitors from various clubs throughout Ireland, UK, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Ukraine will take part in the event which is hosted by the Kilkenny Kettlebell Club.

Last year saw the first ever competition of this kind in Ireland and this year the competition is the biggest in Europe outside Russia (the home of kettlebells ) and the world championships.

Men and women of all levels, from beginners to the more advanced will compete in the long cycle (clean and jerk ) and snatch sprint events. Competitors will have 10 minutes to complete as many repetitions as possible with kettlebells ranging in weight from 8kg to 32kg. It requires extreme endurance, strength, power, and good technique. Judging is strict and competitors must complete an official lift at all times.

Kettlebell lifting is one of the most challenging endurance and power sports out there. Mix strongman and Olympic weightlifting with marathon running and you’ll get some idea of what a kettlebell athlete is. The competition will be held at St Kieran’s College Sports Hall, Kilkenny.
