Love thy neighbour

A local councillor has asked that Kilkenny be permitted to take part in a European-wide community initiative.

Cllr Malcolm Noonan in a notice of motion at a meeting of the borough council this week, asked that Kilkenny Local Authorities participate in European Neighbours Day on May 21.

In order to take part, the council would need to register as a participating municipality and encourage residents groups and communities to participate by organising events in their areas.

Cllr Noonan said, “This initiative stemmed 10 years ago by the European Union. It focuses on the value of community and the value of neighbours.

“We could participate if residents’ groups would organise community picnics or local barbecues. There is lots of merit in participating in European-wide activities such as this,” he pointed out.

He told the members that the cost of taking part would be in the region of €500.

The executive assured Cllr Noonan that the proposal would be considered.
