Tour of Dunmore Recycling Centre for regugees

The Adult Refugee Programme is an English Language and Socialisation Programme open to all those with refugee status (Stamp 4} with an aim to assist in the process of integration into Irish society.

Participants in the programme which is run locally through County Kilkenny VEC and nationally by the National Adult Refugee Programme, were recently brought on a guided tour of Dunmore Recycling Centre.

The Environmental Awareness Officer from Kilkenny Local Authorities explained to the group what types of waste can be recycled at the centre and informed the group why it is so important to recycle. Interesting facts were presented like recycling a glass bottle can save enough energy to run a television for 15 minutes and that it takes 670 aluminium cans to make a bicycle.

The group was also informed on the local problems which happen when people don’t look after their waste properly. Burning waste at home causes air pollution and can lead to negative health impacts. The issue of illegal dumping was discussed and the Environmental Awareness Officer explained the role of the County Council to enforce proper waste management.

At the end of the visit, all participants were presented with a cotton shopping bag with some further reading material. If you belong to an educational/community group and would like a guided tour of Dunmore Recycling Centre located near Kilkenny City, this can be arranged by ringing the Environmental Awareness Officer on 056-7794470.
