Camogie Legends Cup named for former member

The inaugural Camogie Legends tournament will take place on Saturday, March 5 at St Jude’s GAA Club in Templeogue, Dublin.

The tournament Cup is named in honour of the late Biddy Phillips, a national camogie referee and administrator, who passed away in July of last year.

Kilkenny, Cork, Clare, Galway and Wexford are confirmed for the seven-a-side tournament. The event commences at 11.00am with finals scheduled to take place at 3.30pm.

Biddy Phillips, in whose memory the tournament is to be held, was a long serving member of the Camogie Association serving on the National Referees Committee.

She took charge of the All Ireland Senior Camogie Final in 2007 and was also referee for the Intermediate, Junior & Senior Club All Ireland Finals between 1993 and 1999. She also acted as treasurer of Tipperary Camogie Board from 1988 to 2000.

In addition, she managed Tipperary to their first senior camogie All Ireland title in 1999.

“Biddy’s commitment to Camogie on and off the field was exceptional. She gave wonderful service to Tipperary Camogie, Munster Camogie Council and also at National level,” said the president of the Camogie Association, Joan O’ Flynn.

“The Camogie Association is honoured to have the opportunity to commemorate the memory of Biddy with the Inaugural Legends Tournament and we look forward to a great event on the day.”

The presentation of the Biddy Phillips Cup will take place after the Camogie Legends 2011 Tournament final, scheduled for approximately 3.30pm.

Former camogie greats such as Kilkenny’s own Angela and Ann Downey, as well as Cork’s Linda Mellerick, and Sharon Glynn (Galway ) are among those scheduled to play.
