Mooncoin end 28 year drought to take county under 21 title

The boys of Mooncoin put in an excellent performance to claim victory against Erin's Own in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons County Roinn A Under 21 final on Sunday afternoon in Nowlan Park.

Erin’s Own of Castlecomer got off to a great start going ahead by an impressive 1-1 after just five minutes into the game.

However, not at all fazed Mooncoin enjoyed the better of exchanges for the balance of the half while holding the 'Comer men scoreless and were well worth their interval lead of six points — Mooncoin 1-7 to Erin's Own 1-1.  Erin's Own came back into the game in what was a most exciting and nailbiting second half.

A second half goal for the northern champions reduced the deficit to the minimum but Mooncoin responded well to the pressure to win the title they last held in 1983. The final score — Mooncoin 1-15, Erin’s Own 2-08.  The winning team: Niall O'Hanlon, Shane Walsh, Cormac Daly (capt ) Naill Madden, David Kearns, Eamon Henneby, Seamus Kearns, Thomas Healy, PJ Rowe, Danny Purcell, Mark Fitzgerald, Aidan Walsh, Stephen Crowley, Tomas Kearns, JP Purcell. Substitutes: Nicky Hennebry for Thomas Healy, Liam Walsh, Ethan Ryan, John Healy, Eoin Crowley, Brian Meade, Niall Dowling, Richie Doyle, Christopher Norris, Ian Walsh, Colin Walsh, Thomas Walsh.
