Holmes makes a great start to his indoor season

Jonathan Holmes, KCH, got his 2011 indoor season off to a brilliant start with three sub seven seconds performances at the North England championships last weekend. Having broken the seven second barrier in heat and semi-final he clocked 6.94 to win a well deserved bronze in the final.

On Saturday a small group of Kilkenny athletes journeyed to Nenagh for the annual AAI Games. Austin Lee, St Joseph’s, made it a successful outing winning silver in the long jump and bronze in the shot put. Fiona Denehy, St Senan’s, clocked 16.16.71 to win bronze in the 3Kwalk. Ciara Everard, in the UCD colours had a useful workout in the 1,000m which she completed in 2.51.45.

On Sunday it was the turn of the veterans at the AAI Indoor Masters, also held in Nenagh. Gowran’s Pat Mahon, competing at the long jump, was in top form. Clearing 5.35 he won gold and set a new national record in the V5 category. Veteran of veterans, John Gormon, Gowran, had an outstanding championship. Competing in the over 70’s he won gold in the 400m, silver in the 200m and was 4th in the 600m. A third Gowran athlete, Marty Kelly, finished 4th in the 400m O/55. It was silver in the shot put for father and son, Murty and Joe Kelly, Brow Rangers. Murty threw 10.04m in the O/60s while Joe made 11.65m in the O/40’s. Verena Fenlon, St Joseph’s, had double silver in the O/35’s with 9.16m in the shot put and 3.00.42 in the 800m. Pat Power, St Joseph’s, competing in the over 50’s won gold in the 60m sprint and bronze in the long jump.
