Dave Callaghan, founder of Mobile Connections is sadly closing his doors on February 3, after 11 years, eight months, and two days in business.
The mobile phone, internet cafe, and T-shirt printing business first operated from a premises on Rose Inn Street in the city and in a bid to boost business, moved to its current High Street location opposite the Book Centre, where it has been operating for almost a year.
“Business hasn’t been great,” said Mr Callaghan. “Christmas really ruined us I suppose. It’s been a tough year and unfortunately we are a casualty.”
The presence of the business will be missing off the High Street streetscape but Mr Callaghan is still hoping to keep some of the business going from home when he closes up shop.
“I hope to keep some of my customers going from my home with phone unlocking, phone repairs, and T-shirt printing, and hopefully that will tide me over until the economy improves and I can come back in a fuller capacity again,” he said.
He pointed out that at the height of the economy there were several businesses like his operating in Kilkenny.
“When I first began there were seven internet cafes in operation in the centre of the city. Now there are none - when I close my doors the nearest internet cafe is now in the Newpark Shopping Centre. It really is a sign of the times,” he said.
