Socialist Party election candidate Conor Mac Liam is starting his campaign with a public meeting next Thursday to launch the United Left Alliance (ULA ) in Kilkenny. Joe Higgins MEP (Socialist Party ) and Cllr Seamus Healy (Tipperary Workers & Unemployed Action Group ) are also on the bill.

“This is an important opportunity for people to hear a real alternative to the slash and burn policies being promoted by the major parties,” Mr Mac Liam said.

“Ordinary people did not create this crisis, yet Fianna Fail and the Greens are making us pay through increased taxes, levies, job losses, dole cuts, health cuts and education cuts and still they insist on protecting the wealthy.

“Fine Gael and Labour have committed themselves to continuing the austerity measures should they be elected to government. Super rich developers, bankers and stock market gamblers created the crisis and they should bear the brunt of fixing it.

“The ULA brings together forces on the genuine left including the Socialist Party, The People Before Profit Alliance and the Tipperary Workers and Unemployed Action Group. The Socialist Party is hopeful that the ULA can stand candidates in half the constituencies nationally, giving workers, the unemployed and young people a real alternative to vote for. There are at least six very strong contenders for seats from the ULA.

“The ULA is striving to build a mass left alternative to the major parties that are all committed to implementing cuts and attacks on ordinary people. It rejects solutions to the economic crisis based on

slashing public expenditure, welfare payments and workers pay. The ULA is open to anyone who wishes to get actively involved in building such an alternative.”

The public meeting takes place in Kytelers Inn, at 8.45pm on Thursday, January 20.
