Conway strikes late as Tullogher complete hat-trick

Iverk Southern Junior hurling final

Tullogher-Rosbercon 1-11

Piltown 0-8

A scrappy and intense Southern Junior final saw Tullogher-Rosbercon take control from the outset as they always led against a wasteful Piltown outfit.

A poor quality first-half saw Tullogher-Rosbercon lead 0-7 to 0-4 at the interval, as John Barron pointed on four occasions (3 frees ) while Pat Hartley, Walter Walsh and Shane Ryan added points as too much stop-start passages of play occurred.

Barron added two further frees while further points from Richie Dollard and substitute Martin Bookle extended the lead to five points entering the final quarter-0-11 to 0-6.

Piltown enjoyed a phase of dominant possession and a brace of points by James Connolly (2 ,1’65 ) reduced the margin, but they were denied goal chances by the magnificent of Tullogher-Rosbercon goalkeeper Martin Roche, and the defence led by the imperious Molling Cotterell.

However, Tullogher-Rosbercon managed to weather the Piltown storm and a long clearance downfield by John Cotterall saw the towering Walter Walsh race through on goal.

His shot was blocked on the goal-line, before a combination of work saw Shane Ryan and Eddie Conway squeeze the sliothar over the goal-line for the scruffiest of efforts.

A workmanlike performance from the 2006 and 2007 junior finalists as their resilient defence worked immensely, but their attack performed below par, and greater improvement will be required as they face Lisdowney in the junior decider on Saturday.

Scorers – Tulogher – John Barron 0-6(0-5 frees ), Eddie Conway 1-0, Pat Hartley, Walter Walsh, Shane Ryan, Martin Bookle and Richie Dollard all 0-1 each.

Piltown – James Norris (all frees ) + James Connolly(1 free + ’65 ) 0-4 each.
