Protect our postal services, says Cavanagh

Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh has called on Kilkenny County Council to put pressure on the Government to recognise the unique and vital role of the postal service in Ireland.

Speaking at this week’s meeting of the council Cllr Cavanagh said that the postal services are integral to communities as a means of communication, as a vital economic tool, and as an intrinsic part of the community.

“I feel that the postal service has a social value as well as an economic value,” she said. “Present postal service must be protected as the Government drafts legislation to open the postal market to full competition. Proper regulation must protect against urban cherry picking.”

Cllr Cavanagh added that postal men and women provide an important public service and function as an integral part of the social fabric of their community, particularly for the elderly and the isolated.

“Also of course the jobs of postmen and postwomen must be protected,” she concluded.
