Enterprising Kilkenny children are to participate in Ireland’s first Young Producers Food Market during the Savour Kilkenny Food Festival which takes place over the October Bank Holiday weekend.
Fresh thinking and tasty ideas will be on display from 40 young food innovators who will be selling home-made produce at their very own food stalls between 2pm and 5pm in MacDonagh Junction on Saturday October 23.
Organiser, Dorcas Barry, said there has been a huge response to the Young Producers Market with approximately 40 young people aged between 13 and 17 taking part.
“We have teenagers doing loads of interesting things with food, both savoury and sweet. There is lots of talent out there. For example one young girl is making her own lollypops while a boy has come up with a recipe for a scone to serve with his special stew!”
Siblings Morgan and Freya Smith will be selling their gluten-free Pinwheel Cookies, while Louise Bourke will serve a delicious chorizo and bean stew. Anam Ali, Mohua Jalali and Signe Sandere provide an ethnic feel with their version of a spicy Chicken Tikka dish while Bethany Hart will be hoping impress with her fortune cookies.
Well known Kilkenny chef, Eugene McSweeney, will be teaching a special food safety and hygiene class, which is an essential part of food preparation, before the festival weekend.
Apart from the Young Producers Market there is lots more for children over the Festival weekend. Cake decorating will also be taking place in MacDonagh Junction from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday October 23.
