A garda-issue firearm and a large quantity of ammunition, which was thought to have gone missing from Tipperary Garda Station, has been found in the garda station.
Chief Superintendent Michael McGarry from Kilkenny, who lead the investigation, has confirmed that while the gun should have been returned to the station’s safe storage area it was not stolen and remained secure within the walls of Tipperary Garda Station.
Over a week ago, the gun had been removed from a secure area at the station. An audit at Tipperary Garda Station revealed the disappearance of the revolver and 20 rounds of ammunition, leading the Garda Commissioner to appoint a senior officer to investigate.
The .38 Calibre Smith & Wesson and its ammunition were discovered in another secure area in the station, in a garda’s locker on Friday October 8.
