Kilkenny-born top 10 recording artist Darren Holden has commited himself to the Climb for Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge in association with 2FM in aid of the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
Joining him on the trek will be a host of Irish celebs including Karl Spain and Jenny Buckley, Sile Seoige, Kathryn Thomas, and 2FM DJ, Ruth Scott.
The Climb for Kids team will depart Dublin on October 9, and spend seven gruelling days taking on Africa’s highest mountain. Each day they will trek for an average of seven hours through forest, semi-desert and alpine desert before taking on stone scree and reaching Kilimanjaro’s ice-capped summit on October 15.
Darren said, “having climbed Machu Picchu last year in aid of Irish Autism Action, and learning of all the hurdles that sick children and their parents face on a daily basis, I immediately decided that if the opportunity arose again to help out a charity, especially one that aids children, I would be there in a heartbeat.”
According to Joe Quinsey, CEO of CMRF, “we are overwhelmed by our celebrity participants and our fundraisers who are giving so generously of their time to this project. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro will be a huge challenge for them that in some way may reflect the challenges that many of the children who come to Crumlin face. The money raised through the project will make a huge difference to the wellbeing of sick children in Our lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin and to our significant research programmes currently underway within the National Children’s Research Centre.
To take on your own personal challenge to Climb 4 Kids Mount Kilimanjaro Challenge, in association with 2fm, we are asking 1,000 people to raise €100 by taking up their own Climb for Kids – Mount Kilimanjaro Pedometer Challenge, a fantastic opportunity for others to be able to take on your own personal challenge for our sick kids! We are calling on people to sign up and receive a climb for kids pedometer, log their steps and ‘kinda’ climb Kilimanjaro with our team to the summit!”
